It looks like the studies show some effectiveness for diarrhea rather than constipation, and that they are still uncertain as to which probiotics to use. Although, for someone without IBS, double or triple doses of probiotics can result in diarrhea.

To get the best quality probiotics, see a Naturopath and make sure they are the refrigerated kind. You should also be able to buy some refrigerated types over the counter at any health food store, but my experience is that they are not as effective so presumably not as high a quality (this means less live cultures make it through your system).

If you get a powder form, you can more easily manage the dose. You could start with small amounts and slowly increase to see at what point you get some relief without also creating bloating pains. Usage recommendation from a Naturopath is 1/2 teaspoon 20 minutes before eating once a day.
